what is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is the branch of medicine that majors on the study, diagnosis and managment of rheumatic diseases

What are Rheumatic Diseases?

Rheumatic diseases are majorly systemic autoimmune, inflammatory disorders affecting skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, fasciae, bursae, bones, joints, nerves, blood, blood vessels, and most internal organs. But also included are mechanical/degenerative joint diseases,  regional musculoskeletal pain, and chronic widespread pain syndromes.

Examples of rheumatic diseases include:

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Presents mostly with pains, swelling, stiffness of small joints of hands and feet symmetrically, but other joints also involved,

Lupus

Also known as a disease of a thousand manifestations because of its numerous different clinical presentations. Most common presentations are skin rash, joint pains and swellings, internal organ involvement, typically the kidney.

Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis

presents mostly with inability to lift the arms to do the hair, inability to rise from sitting position, inability to step onto a cab, these due to weakness of the muscles of the shoulders, arms, pelvis and thighs. Additonally, in dermatomyositis, there is a cahracteristic skin rash.

Vasculitis

Inflammation of blood vessels leads to compromised blood supply to various organs leading to ischaemia in target tissues with corresponding symptoms like gangrene, peripheral nerve damage and weakness, CVA, seizures, impaired vision, kidney disease, upper respiratory and lung disease etc

Scleroderma

Presents mostly with swelling, thickening, hardening of the skin, changes in skin colour, episodes of blue fingers, stiffness of fingers with finger tip ulcers, difficulty swallowing, joint pains...

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

Presents commonly as painful swollen joints, from no known cause, in a child of less than 16 years of age.

Stay Healthy

A healthy diet and lifestyle is of great importance in the prevention and management of a number of rheumatic and associated metabolic diseases.
These include gout, osteoarthritis, and associated metabolic diseases like type II diabetes mellitus, bad cholesterol, and hypertension.
Rheumatoid arthritis also puts the patient at higher risk of developing type II diabetes, and lupus patients are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.
